The Kyiv Appeal Court partially upheld the appeal concerning the preventive measure for the mayor of Irpin, Oleksandr Markushin: the official has been placed under round-the-clock house arrest.
This was reported by “Suspilne” .
“The investigating judge did not take into account the procedure for suspicion: he did not acquire the status of a suspect, and his financial situation was not assessed. The State Border Guard Service still allows single parents to leave the country. The main reason was to bring drones and then congratulate his son on his birthday. He caused no harm,” noted defense attorney Ilya Vorobyov.
Additionally, military personnel, community representatives, and public figures attended the hearing, expressing their willingness to stand surety for Markushin. Among them were MP Olga Vasylevska-Smahliuk and businessman Hryhorii Korohodskyi.
Markushin himself stated that since September 2022, his children have been living in Ukraine: his eldest son with his ex-wife, while four-year-old Mark lives with him.
“In the week that I have been in pre-trial detention, no one has interrogated me. Before the preventive measure was chosen, I surrendered my foreign passport; I do not intend to flee. At the beginning of the invasion, I defended the city while these prosecutors and the State Bureau of Investigation were protecting the borders of Lviv,” he said.
It is noted that the defense also plans to appeal the decision regarding his suspension from office.
Reminder: The court imposed a preventive measure on Markushin in the form of detention until March 22, 2025, with the possibility of posting bail of 30 million UAH.
The case concerns the mayor of Irpin's foreign trip, which lasted from August 24 to 30, 2022. According to law enforcement, Markushin allegedly went to Italy not to provide assistance to the military, but to see his two-year-old son.
According to the prosecutor, Markushin did not provide any documents confirming his volunteer activities abroad.
