The United States has permitted Ukraine to strike military targets deep within Russian territory, confirmed EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell on November 18 following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, as reported by Reuters.
“The Biden administration has allowed the use of its weapons up to 300 kilometers inside Russian territory. The American administration had long said 'no' and ultimately said 'yes,'” he stated.
According to him, the issue of allowing Ukrainian servicemen to utilize American weapons for strikes into Russia was discussed at the meeting of EU foreign ministers on Monday.
“So, we are talking about a radius of 300 kilometers. It’s not that much when considering distance; it doesn’t reach far into the country, but that is the decision of the administration. Why they made this decision now and not before the elections, I don’t know,” Borrell noted.
He also emphasized that the EU foreign ministers did not reach a joint decision to lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons on Russian territory.
“Each country decides for itself,” Borrell said.
Background. As reported, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated in Brussels that France will consider the possibility of allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territory with its long-range missiles.
