American tennis player Frances Tiafoe (26 years old) has received the second-largest fine in the history of professional men's tennis.
ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) penalized him with a fine of $120,000. The only larger fine was last year for French player Hugo Gaston ($152,000).
The issue arose after the American approached the umpire's chair following his match against "neutral" athlete Roman Safiullin. Instead of offering the traditional handshake with the official, he verbally abused him using profanity.
Tiafoe's reaction was in response to the referee calling him for "delay of serve" three times during the match, as Frances failed to execute his serve within the allotted 25 seconds.
Formally, Tiafoe received two separate fines (for verbal abuse and aggressive behavior) of $60,000 each.
It is worth noting that, according to ATP, the 18th ranked player in the world has earned $2,699,718 this year, while his career prize money totals nearly $13 million.
