White House: New sanctions will cost Russia billions every month.

The U.S. administration hopes that the new sanctions package against the Russian oil and gas sector, announced on Friday, will force Russia to lose billions of dollars each month.

“These sanctions target both Russian oil and liquefied gas, and we expect our actions to cost Russia billions of dollars per month,” said John Kirby, a representative of the National Security Council at the U.S. administration, to reporters.

According to the Ukrinform agency, Kirby stated that in the current market situation, these sanctions should not lead to any serious negative consequences for the economy and consumers.

Experts predict that throughout this year, despite the sanctions against Russian oil, the supply in the global energy market will exceed demand.

Background. Recall that The U.S. Treasury has imposed sanctions against "Surgutneftegas," "Gazprom Neft," insurance companies, and the Russian "shadow fleet."

The list published on the U.S. Treasury's website includes the insurance companies "Ingosstrakh" and "AlfaStrakhovanie." Nearly 200 vessels (mostly tankers) were added to the list, many of which, according to U.S. Treasury data, are linked to "Sovcomflot."   "Sovcomflot" itself is also under sanctions.

On the eve, The Guardian reported that Europe purchased a record volume of Russian liquefied gas in 2024. The main reasons for this are the low price of LNG and the absence of sanctions.
