Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico has written a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, once again expressing his concerns about Ukraine's refusal to continue the transit of Russian gas after 2024.

This is mentioned in a letter published on Fico's social media accounts.

In the letter, the Slovak Prime Minister informs EU leaders that “the tacit approval of the unilateral decision by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is incorrect and irrational.” Fico also points out that this “will lead to tensions and retaliatory measures.”

“There is no doubt that the unilateral decision of the Ukrainian president will significantly negatively impact our joint European efforts to keep pace with rapidly developing countries around the world,” Fico wrote.

He stated that he is unsure whether the “vague approach” of the European Commission and the majority of member states is based on the fact that the economic consequences of ceasing gas transit through Ukraine “have not been professionally analyzed at all, and everything has been evaluated only ideologically,” or if such an analysis was conducted but not openly discussed with member states.

In his letter, Fico asserts that stopping gas transit will harm the EU more than Russia, citing “objective and convincing documents” from the Slovak gas company SPP.

Finally, the head of the Slovak government urged EU leaders to “pay proper attention to this unprecedented situation and give it significant consideration.”
