Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico posted a video address on Facebook regarding what he termed response measures following Ukraine's cessation of Russian gas transit, as reported by Reuters.
According to him, these actions will be discussed by the government and the ruling party Smer in the coming days.
In particular, the response measures may include not only the suspension of electricity supplies to Ukraine, a threat Fico had made previously, but also a reduction in assistance to Ukrainian refugees currently in Slovakia.
Furthermore, Slovakia will demand either the resumption of transit from Ukraine or compensation for the losses incurred, Fico stated.
Slovakia remained one of the last countries receiving Russian gas via pipeline through Ukraine. The transit supply contract expired on December 31, and Kyiv had previously stated multiple times that it did not intend to continue transit.
On the morning of January 1, Gazprom halted gas supplies through this pipeline.
Some European countries continue to receive Russian gas via pipelines that pass through Turkey and the Balkans.
Background. Recall that earlier Fico sent a letter to EU leaders, complaining about Zelensky. In the letter, he lamented Ukraine's refusal to extend the transit of Russian gas beyond 2024.
