The Permanent Mission of Panama to the UN has submitted a complaint to the organization in light of the new U.S. President Donald Trump's plans to exert control over the Panama Canal.
As reported by Le Figaro.
The newspaper notes that in a letter sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Panama expressed concern regarding Trump's inaugural speech, in which he declared his intention to seize the Panama Canal.
In its address, the country requests that the message be conveyed to the 15 members of the UN Security Council (UNSC), of which Panama has been a member since January 1, as stated in the article.
Recall that Trump announced his intention to regain control over the Panama Canal in December 2024. He reiterated this during his inaugural speech on January 20, accusing the Panamanian government of failing to meet promises regarding canal transit fees.
In response, Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino Quintero stated that "every square meter of the Panama Canal belongs to Panama and will continue to belong to Panama."
