France and the United Kingdom have resumed joint discussions about the possibility of sending regular troops or fighters from private military companies to Ukraine.
This was reported by the French newspaper Le Monde, citing anonymous sources.
However, in the direct quote provided by the newspaper, there is no mention of deploying troops.
Le Monde recalls that earlier this year, President Emmanuel Macron stated that France does not rule out the option of sending military assistance to Ukraine. Later, Paris clarified that the discussion might be more about sending French units as support garrisons.
Several other European capitals, including Berlin, have expressed strong opposition to Macron's idea.
“But this scenario has not been dismissed. In recent weeks, it has even, according to our information, gained new momentum thanks to the visit of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to France on November 11,” writes Le Monde, noting that European allies are preparing for a potential reduction in American aid to Ukraine with the return of Donald Trump to power.
However, in the quote from the newspaper's anonymous source, a British Ministry of Defence official only provided general remarks about strengthening military cooperation and assistance to Ukraine.
“There are discussions between the United Kingdom and France regarding defense collaboration, particularly aimed at establishing a core of allies in Europe, focusing on assistance to Ukraine and ensuring European security in a broader sense,” the quote states.
Background. Recall that the Lithuanian Foreign Minister has proposed sending European troops to Ukraine in response to Russia's engagement of North Korean soldiers.
