Germany will supply Ukraine with two additional IRIS-T air defense systems by the end of the year, including the SLM medium-range and SLS short-range models.
This was announced to journalists by Major General Christian Freuding, head of the special staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense, in Kyiv on November 25, reports European Pravda.
"The next IRIS-T SLM (medium-range) and SLS (short-range) systems are expected to arrive in Ukraine in the coming days and weeks, before Christmas," Freuding said.
He added that Berlin's support for Ukraine will continue even after Christmas and the federal elections in Germany on February 23.
On November 13, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine would receive its sixth German IRIS-T air defense system by the end of the year following his conversation with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
In total, Ukraine will then have seven systems in its arsenal.
IRIS-T is the most advanced surface-to-air missile system designed to combat aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles.
In September, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced plans to deliver an additional 17 IRIS-T systems in the future to further strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Germany has become a key defense partner for Ukraine since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion, providing, among other things, IRIS-T and Patriot air defense systems, anti-aircraft and artillery systems, armored vehicles, Leopard tanks, drones, and ammunition.
It is worth noting that on November 20, the German government announced a new military aid package that INCLUDES howitzers, transport vehicles, and hundreds of drones.
