The Prime Minister of Greenland announced that the island seeks independence from Denmark.

For several years, the parliament and government of Greenland have been "working together" to declare independence from Denmark, Eddege stated.
Премьер-министр Гренландии заявил, что остров стремится к независимости от Дании.

The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Børup Egede, emphasized his desire to achieve independence from Denmark, marking a significant shift in the rhetoric surrounding the island's future, reports the Reuters agency.

“History and current conditions have shown that our cooperation with the Kingdom of Denmark has not led to full equality, and if we are to continue relying on the Danish constitution, equal cooperation cannot be achieved,” said the Prime Minister of Greenland in his New Year's address.

Egede added that for several years, the Greenlandic parliament and government have been “working together” to declare independence from the European country.

“A draft constitution for our country has also been prepared,” he stated.

Egede mentioned that the decision for independence rests with the people of Greenland, but he did not specify when a vote might take place.

It has been reported that the Greenlandic government rejected offers from elected U.S. President Donald Trump to purchase the island, first in 2019 and again in 2024, while Egede asserted, “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and never will be.”

Parliamentary elections are set to take place in Greenland on April 6.

Denmark colonized Greenland in the 18th century. A referendum held in 1979 resulted in Greenland becoming a self-governing autonomy within the kingdom.

A Danish law passed in 2009 further expanded the powers of local authorities.

The population of Greenland is approximately 56,000 residents.

Recall that in December, Donald Trump expressed his desire to buy Greenland and incorporate it into the U.S. In a Christmas greeting, he claimed that Greenlanders supposedly want the U.S. to be there.

“And they will get it!” declared the elected President of the United States.
