Serbia's Prime Minister Miloš Vučević has officially confirmed his resignation amid widespread protests that have swept the country in recent weeks.
Vučević made this announcement at a press conference, as reported by RTS.
In commenting on the protests, he urged everyone to calm down and return to dialogue.
Additionally, Vučević stated that the mayor of Novi Sad, Milan Đurić, is also resigning.
Vučević mentioned that he had a long and meaningful conversation with Serbia's President Aleksandar Vučić this morning, adding that Vučić agreed with his decision and reasoning.
He declared that politicians need to take responsibility and demonstrate their readiness to help reduce societal tensions.
At the same time, Vučević emphasized that the "serious division in society" is "maliciously planned from abroad."
"There is a misunderstanding of one another, countless disputes and conflicts throughout Serbia. No matter how much we call for calming down, some evil always follows. Something has happened in the script. It’s as if some invisible hand has created a new incident and heightened tension in society," said Miloš Vučević.
Reminder: Students from several state universities in Serbia have been blocking classes and organizing protests for weeks due to the collapse of a concrete canopy at the train station in Novi Sad, which claimed the lives of 15 people. They are demanding the release of all documents related to the station's reconstruction, criminal prosecution of officials responsible for the disaster, and the release of detained protesters.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that Serbia terminated several contracts for the purchase of Russian weapons, which it had been acquiring since the Soviet era.
