The European Union is prepared to allocate 200 million euros to the armed forces of Lebanon amid Israeli strikes.
This was stated by the EU's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, during his visit to Lebanon.
Borrell noted that his five-year term ends on December 1. This is his third visit to Lebanon this year.
“I decided to conclude my mandate here in Lebanon because what is happening in the Middle East, and specifically here in Beirut, poses a challenge to the international community to determine whether we truly want and are capable of achieving peace,” emphasized the head of European diplomacy.
According to him, Lebanon “is on the brink of collapse” due to the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah in the southern part of the country, as well as airstrikes on Beirut and Baalbek.
The high representative of the EU noted that as a result of Israeli airstrikes, over 3,500 people have died in Lebanon, which he stated is three times more than during the Lebanon War of 2006. Additionally, another 15,000 people have been injured.
“As the European Union, we stand with the Lebanese people, the Lebanese army, and Lebanese institutions. We are ready to allocate 200 million euros to the armed forces of Lebanon,” he assured.
Borrell also stated that the success of efforts to achieve a ceasefire and establish long-term peace lies “in the hands of the parties.” He emphasizes that to expedite the end of the war, Lebanese leaders “must take political responsibility” by choosing a president.
Background. Earlier, Mind reported that modern Russian weapons were found in the storage of “Hezbollah.” This includes anti-tank missiles, the Igla air defense system, grenade launchers, rifles, and more.
At the same time, in October, “Hezbollah” agreed to a ceasefire with Israel after the elimination of three leaders of the group. The United States and several Arab countries are engaged in discreet negotiations with Iran to achieve a ceasefire on several fronts in the region.
