Donald Trump Jr. has arrived in Nuuk on the island of Greenland, which falls under Danish jurisdiction. This occurred just two weeks after the elected U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his desire to control this territory.
A Boeing 757 aircraft emblazoned with the word “Trump” landed at the airport on Tuesday, January 7.
Trump announced the trip on his social media platform, Truth Social, on January 6.
“My son, Don Jr., and various representatives from the U.S. will be going there to visit some of the most notable sites and attractions,” he wrote.
The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in turn, stated that it took the information into account. “Since this is not an official American visit, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no further comments,” the agency AFP reported.
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders,” emphasized Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in an interview with TV 2, adding that this territory is “not for sale.”
Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede also dismissed the possibility of any deals with the U.S.
“Greenland belongs to us. We are not for sale and will never be sold. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” he stressed.
It has been reported that the Greenland government rejected proposals from elected U.S. President Donald Trump to purchase the island twice, once in 2019 and again in 2024, while Egede asserted that “Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be sold.”
Parliamentary elections are set to take place in Greenland on April 6.
Denmark colonized Greenland in the 18th century. In 1979, a referendum was held on the island, resulting in Greenland becoming a self-governing autonomy within the kingdom.
Danish legislation from 2009 further expanded the powers of local authorities.
The population of Greenland is approximately 56,000 residents.
Recall that in December, Donald Trump expressed his desire to buy Greenland and incorporate it into the U.S. In his Christmas greeting, he claimed that Greenlanders supposedly want the U.S. to be there.
“And they will get it!” declared the elected President of the United States.
