The operator of the electric systems in Slovakia, the state-owned company SEPS, announced its intention to continue supplying electricity to Ukraine as part of the emergency assistance provided under the existing contract with the Ukrainian state company "Ukrenergo."
Source. This was reported by iRozhlas citing SEPS.
According to the statement, supplies will be conducted through all high-voltage lines in normal mode, despite the threats made earlier by Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico.
At the end of December, Fico stated that Slovakia might stop exporting electricity to Ukraine if Kyiv halts the transit of Russian gas starting January 1, 2025.
According to the Slovak Prime Minister, the cessation of transit would lead to additional energy costs in Europe amounting to 120 billion euros in 2025-2026, while Slovakia would lose about 500 million euros annually.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Fico's threats an attempt to open a second energy front against Ukraine.
“It seems that Putin has instructed Fico to act against the interests of Slovakia by threatening to cut off emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine in winter while Russia continues to strike at our energy system,” Zelensky noted.
On January 3, Fico also stated that in response to the cessation of Russian gas transit, Slovakia might reduce assistance to Ukrainian refugees located in the country.
In the evening of January 3, a rally took place in Bratislava against Robert Fico's pro-Russian policies and in support of Ukraine. According to the local publication Aktuality, the event gathered around 4,000 people near the government building.
The organizer was the civic association "Peace for Ukraine." The protesters carried flags of Slovakia and the European Union and performed the EU anthem – "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Among the slogans were: "Slovakia – Europe," "Fico, move to Moscow!" and "We are not a Russian proxy!"
Background. Meanwhile, a scandal has erupted in Slovakia: after a trip to Moscow, Fico disappeared for 2 weeks, only to reappear in a luxury hotel in Vietnam. It was from this hotel that he recorded his videos accusing Ukraine of halting transit.
