Washington has informed Kyiv and other allies about Russia's launch of the ballistic missile "Oreshnik" targeting Ukrainian territory.
Source. This was stated by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre during a briefing.
“We are aware of Russia's ballistic missile launch. In recent days, we conducted a briefing for Ukraine and our closest allies to assist them in their preparations. The main escalation we are witnessing is that Russia has moved to another country from another part of the world – North Korea – and has deployed thousands of soldiers to the front line,” she said.
Earlier, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov clarified that Moscow had warned Washington about the launch of the "Oreshnik" missile through the Russian National Center for Nuclear Risk Reduction (NCZRN).
“The warning was sent in an automatic mode 30 minutes before the launch,” he said.
In his emergency address, Vladimir Putin stated that the Russian army used the advanced ballistic missile "Oreshnik" to strike Ukraine in response to the use of Western long-range weapons on Russian territory. According to him, the combat deployment of the new missile was a response to Kyiv's use of American and British long-range weaponry.
Putin noted that modern air defense systems cannot intercept "Oreshnik" missiles, as they attack targets at speeds of 10 Mach (2.5–3 km per second). He also claimed that Russia would supposedly offer peaceful residents of Ukraine and “citizens of other friendly countries” to evacuate from the affected zone in advance.
“In combat conditions, tests were conducted, in particular, of one of the latest Russian medium-range missile systems. In this case, with a ballistic missile in a non-nuclear hypersonic configuration. Our missile forces named it 'Oreshnik'. The tests were successful, and the launch targets were achieved,” Putin stated in a televised address on Thursday.
