Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced an extraordinary summit initiated by Warsaw with the countries of Northern Europe and the Baltic region to discuss the need for a unified Western stance on supporting Ukraine.

The summit will take place next week in Sweden, Tusk reported on social media.

“Today I spoke with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister (of Canada) Justin Trudeau; next week in Sweden, there will be a special format with Scandinavian countries, plus the Baltics, plus Poland. The event aims to develop a unified position on supporting Ukraine and collective security,” wrote the head of the Polish government.

Background. As previously reported, the meeting of the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy, and Poland in Warsaw was timed to coincide with the milestone of 1000 days since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The main topic was the future relations between the European Union and the United States following Donald Trump's return to the White House. The foreign ministers of Spain and the UK participated in the discussions online.

According to Polish Minister Radoslaw Sikorski following the meeting, the largest economies in Europe – Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the UK – are prepared to take on the military and financial burden associated with providing assistance to Ukraine in the event of a potential reduction in support from the United States.
