Putin is prepared to hold negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump, stated Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov during a press briefing on January 24.
Previously, Trump expressed his desire to meet with Putin "very soon" after his inauguration. In response, the Kremlin indicated that preparations for such a meeting were not currently underway.
"Putin is ready, we are waiting for signals, everyone is prepared... If anything happens, we will inform you," Peskov said.
Moscow is open to discussions with Washington regarding nuclear disarmament, but it is also important to consider the arsenals of U.S. allies – the United Kingdom and France, the spokesman added.
"In the interest of the entire world, in the interest of the peoples of our countries, of course, we are interested in starting this negotiation process as soon as possible," he added.
Peskov also responded to Trump's recent statement that he would ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower oil prices and that this would "immediately" end the war.
Peskov questioned this statement, asserting that the war does not depend on oil prices and supposedly occurs due to "the threat to Russia and Russians."
Background. As reported, Putin reacted to Trump's threats to crash oil prices, stating that it would be disadvantageous for the U.S., and described Trump as "a smart and pragmatic person."
Additionally, Putin stated that if Trump were president instead of Biden, the war would not have started. The day after Trump's threats to lower oil prices, he expressed a keen desire to meet with the American president.
