Hungary has yet to decide whether to support the extension of EU sanctions against Russia at the end of January, believing that the EU should make a decision on this matter only after consulting with the new administration of Donald Trump.
This was stated by Hungary's Minister for EU Affairs, János Bóka, writes Reuters.
“I think it is quite natural that before making a decision to extend the sanctions for another six months, we will ask the new US administration how they view the future of the sanctions regime,” Bóka told reporters in Brussels.
Bóka mentioned that the sanctions planned for extension pertain to various sectors of the economy and the freezing of assets of the Russian central bank.
“Currently, there is no decision regarding Hungary's position. We want to postpone our decision until we learn how the US administration envisions the future of the sanctions regime,” Bóka said.
Recall that the EU approved 15 packages of sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and is working on the 16th package of measures.
