Ukraine will restore diplomatic relations with Syria if the new government revokes the decisions made by Bashar Assad's regime, which supported violations of Ukraine's territorial integrity.
This was stated by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Georgiy Tikhiy, during a briefing, as reported by Ukrinform.
“We will see how the new authorities will act. We understand that the previous Assad regime acknowledged the violations of Ukraine's territorial integrity, which led to the severance of diplomatic relations. If this policy changes, diplomatic relations will be restored,” Tikhiy said.
The spokesperson added that contact with the new Syrian government has already been established at the ministerial level.
Tikhiy emphasized that the delivery of 500 tons of wheat flour to Syria is not just a one-time initiative, but part of a broader policy reflecting Ukraine's sincere desire to assist the Syrian people in their challenging situation.
“We understand how difficult it is for ordinary Syrians after such a war and the fall of this brutal regime. So yes, this is part of a wider policy. I believe you will see more steps in this direction in the future,” the diplomat noted.
Tikhiy assured that if there is mutual readiness to develop this dialogue, Kyiv will take further steps in this direction.
