In Brisbane, Australia, the WTA500 tournament is underway, and Ukrainian player Angelina Kalinina has reached the semifinals.
In the quarterfinal match, the world’s 55th-ranked player defeated the tournament's host, Kimberly Birrell.
The first set was marked by dominance on serve, with only one break point occurring in the first eight games, which the Australian failed to convert. However, in the ninth game, Kalinina started at 0:40 and managed to save only two break points, eventually losing her serve and the set.
In the second set, Kalinina won the first five games in a row and even had a chance to break in the sixth game to win the set "to love," but she missed that opportunity. Nevertheless, in the following game, the Ukrainian won four consecutive points and leveled the match score.
The third set was closely contested, and at 5:5, Birrell even had a match point on Kalinina's serve, but Angelina saved it, won that game, and then secured two more games in a row to clinch the victory.
Angelina Kalinina (Ukraine) – Kimberly Birrell (Australia) – 2:1 (4:6, 6:1, 7:5)
In the semifinals, Kalinina will face "neutral" Polina Kudermetova, who is ranked 107th in the world.
