On the night of January 1st in New Orleans, an unknown driver crashed into a crowd in the city center. Ten people lost their lives, and at least 35 were injured. The driver was shot dead.
According to reports from CNN.
“After the car came to a stop, the suspect reportedly opened fire on the officers, who returned fire,” said police department officials to reporters. Two officers were injured during the exchange of gunfire. They are in stable condition.
Earlier, law enforcement stated that the pickup driver was traveling at a “very high speed, and it was very intentional behavior.” “This man was trying to run over as many people as possible,” the police noted.
The FBI is investigating the tragedy as a terrorist act. The bureau has identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar from Texas. Previously, CNN reported, citing two law enforcement sources, that the suspect was carrying an ISIS flag at the time of the incident.
One source also reported that several possible explosive devices were found in an ice chest in the pickup used for the attack.
