President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky urged the IAEA to take a more active role in the release of Ukrainian hostages captured in Enerhodar.
He made this statement following a meeting with IAEA head Rafael Grossi, who arrived in Ukraine today for a working visit.
"I met with IAEA Director Rafael Grossi. Currently, IAEA missions are operating in Ukraine – at the nuclear power plants. We agreed that the missions will work more actively at other critically important energy facilities. We also discussed with Mr. Grossi the hostages taken by Russian occupiers from Enerhodar. We expect the IAEA to be proactive in its efforts to secure the release of these Ukrainian citizens," Zelensky wrote on social media platform X.
He specifically mentioned the prospects for completing the construction of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant.
"I appreciate that the IAEA Director supported Ukraine's strategy for completing the nuclear units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP. This construction project is key to Ukraine's energy independence and the energy stability of the region, and it is crucial for our lawmakers to support this initiative," the head of state stated.
During the meeting, they discussed in detail the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. The president emphasized the importance of returning the ZNPP under Ukraine's control and invited partners to collaborate in the energy sector.
"We invite partners to work with us in this area. It is mutually beneficial: energy that will make Europe significantly stronger and enhance our relations with America," the Ukrainian president emphasized.
Background. Earlier, Energoatom reported that the power units planned for completion at the Khmelnytskyi NPP will operate on American fuel.
